The Janus Community Champions recently held their first group volunteer day at the Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver. Janus has a long tradition of giving back to the communities where our employees, clients and investors live and work, and believes that an effective and meaningful way of making a contribution is by volunteering. Janus Community Champions are Denver-based employees representing each internal department at the company, with goals of increasing awareness of Janus' investments in the community and promoting employee volunteerism through organized efforts.
The Champions wanted to find an opportunity to work together as a group and set a standard for volunteerism through their own involvement in the community. Partnering with the Food Bank of the Rockies, the Janus Community Champions volunteered their time to support Janus' 2014 food drive partner, Denver Public Schools' Educational Outreach Program (EOP), which helps homeless children use education to break the cycle of poverty.
The group spent the afternoon sorting and packaging non-perishable food items, which will provide the EOP program with almost 6,000 pounds of food, to be used at Lowry Elementary School's Weekend Food Backpack Program. Lowry is a Denver Public School with a wide representation of diverse cultural and social economic backgrounds.
Founded in 1978, the Food Bank of the Rockies is the largest private hunger-relief organization in Colorado and distributes 106,000 meals daily through 1,400 hunger relief agencies and their direct service program. Ninety-six cents of every dollar they receive goes directly to their food distribution program. Children under the age of 18 make up 42% of the households served by the food bank.
The Champions believe that by leading the way and getting involved in their community, they can inspire their colleagues to do the same. "Since we routinely encourage the employees in our own departments to volunteer, it seems appropriate for the Janus Community Champions to set an example for others," said Lisa Griego, the Champion representing the Finance department. "It was also a lot of fun working side by side for a common purpose."
